Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
