People who endured abuse by church officials have expressed renewed hope after their first encounter with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, heading the anti-abuse organization, stated that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so soon in his leadership sent a strong message about his commitment to tackling the issue.

Worldwide Strict Approach Pushed

The group is advocating for a global strict approach that would defrock any clergy member who confesses to or is proven of abusing a minor. This approach has been implemented in the United States.

The Pope acknowledged that there is "opposition in certain regions of the world" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is pushback," Hickey remarked.

Legacy Challenge

The current pontiff, who assumed the position in May, has taken on this longstanding issue that has plagued the Catholic Church for many years.

Previous efforts to resolve the situation included an historic summit on paedophilia within the Church and changes to canon law to explicitly criminalize sexual abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For Hickey, who prefers they/them pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the policy is deeply meaningful. The North American activist shared they were victimized by a priest who was subsequently moved between various churches.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his papacy, because we want to work with him," they stated. "We have the same goal, we want to end abuse by religious officials."

Historic Encounter

Multiple members of the coalition, which represents survivors and supporters from more than 30 nations, met with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The meeting, originally scheduled for a brief period, lasted to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was described as "quite empathetic" when hearing the story of a female survivor victimized at a Catholic residential school for native youth in Canada.

Hickey noted the leader was "compassionate" about their own experience and seemed "very humble, humorous, and very down to earth."

"Victims have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," Hickey stated. "I felt like he was sincere, realistic, and receptive and keen to collaborate with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The group is advocating that changes to church regulations will enable the adoption of the strict approach worldwide.

They have spoken with specialists and compiled materials that they will present to the pontiff.

"He seemed interested in looking at it," Hickey noted.

Responsibility Highlighted

A recently released Vatican-commissioned document emphasized the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or dismissal of Church leaders or staff in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The document also pointed out that victims repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for church leaders and major superiors to be held accountable for negligence and cover-up."

Path Ahead

Hickey shared they told the pontiff at the beginning of their discussion: "This is as much a risk for him to participate in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the encounter, they voiced hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, uniting and establishing a connection and continuing to build that relationship is a move in the correct path," Hickey commented.

Hickey added that they shared with the pontiff: "Just because it's a difficult period, I believe like we can change how the narrative ends - he appreciated that."
