Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the option to question particular decisions from the official, echoing the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
